Major El Pueblo mixed-user taking shape across from Chinatown

Expected to be complete next summer

A big two-block development is well underway on what used to be a pair of county-owned parking lots south of Cesar Chavez Avenue and west of Olvera Street.

Developed by High Street Residential, a subsidiary of Trammell Crow Company, the project will be constructed in two segments. One segment will rise between Hill and Broadway, and the other will sit between Broadway and Spring.

Called LA Plaza Village, the 355-unit development is expected to bring a combination of live/work lofts, studios, and one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments to the neighborhood that’s sort of a bridge between Chinatown and Downtown. 20 percent of the apartments will be affordable housing, according to the website for architecture firm Johnson Fain, which is designing the project.

The development will also feature 43,000 square feet of space for retail and restaurants along the ground floor, especially along the pedestrian path that cuts through the development, linking it to Hill Street and the Fort Moore memorial, which is now being restored.

The LA Plaza Village broke ground last summer, and is being constructed by Morley Builders. At that time, developers anticipated completing the project in the summer of 2018.
